Learning through reading: ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’

At Giddings State Juvenile Correctional Facility’s Lone Star High School Southeast, students and staff have come together to explore the power of perspective and personal growth through the school’s book club.
Led by English classes three and four and Reading Teacher Susanna Luviek, this initiative is off to a strong and meaningful start. It is supported by a strong team composed of SPED Teacher Gloria Brandl, Teacher’s Aide Kellie Bretz, School Counselor Mikel Luna, Science Teacher Guy Futch, and Assistant Principal Dr. Tracey Walker.

The first book selection of the season, Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson, has sparked engaging conversations and thoughtful reflection on its themes of adapting to change in life.
As Luviek reads it aloud, the club pauses to discuss key moments and respond to guiding questions from the educational team. This interactive approach helps ensure everyone is both understanding and connecting with the core themes: change, adaptability and taking ownership of one’s response to life’s challenges.
Each student is also keeping a reading journal, where they’re encouraged to note quotes or ideas that resonate with them. They reflect on how they might apply these lessons to their own lives – whether in school, relationships, or future goals.
Staff members said everyone is looking forward to continuing this journey as the club expands, bringing students and staff together in a shared space of learning, growth, and support.
