By TJJD Communications —
This summer, TJJD hosted two interns at the Central Office in Austin. As a paid internship and an experiential learning opportunity, TJJD values the opportunity for interns to do meaningful work to advance the agency’s mission while gaining real work experience. When looking for a fulltime role, internship experience can be an important factor for potential employers.
TJJD Interns Elliot and Marion came to the agency with previous work and internship experience. While interning, the two worked on a variety of different projects, from bill analysis to data to contributing news stories to TJJD’s website and social media pages, their contributions made an impact on the agency and on their professional development.
Marion said, “Interning at TJJD this summer has been a fantastic experience! The opportunity has allowed me to expand my understanding of state government operations and the extensive agency efforts post-Legislative session. I’ve been able to contribute to several different projects, honing my interests in long-term planning, strategic communications, and research”.
Under Executive Director Shandra Carter’s leadership, TJJD has prioritized internship opportunities.
“This opportunity with TJJD has been seriously lifechanging!” said Elliot about her experience working with TJJD. “I was able to participate in meetings, visit facilities, and work on meaningful analysis projects for our excellent team here at TJJD. All my experiences with the agency have transformed my perspective of juvenile justice and the nuances involved in caring for justice impacted youth…More than anything, I believe in our mission and I believe in our team; everyone is an invaluable teacher and a willing student, and it has been an honor to work with each and every one of them to improve the lives of TJJD youth.”
TJJD constantly and intentionally seeks to partner with institutions wanting to provide young professionals with internship opportunities. If you’d like to learn more about internships with TJJD, or apply for one yourself, please contact Olivia Garza at Olivia.Garza@tjjd.texas.gov.
