Youth at Giddings State Juvenile Correctional Facility ended the school year with an exciting and inspiring event, brought by Sonz of A Beast Empowerment Project, founded by Don Singleton.

The group is a collection of powerlifters, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and formerly incarcerated individuals whose aim is to empower youth to improve their mindset through physical and mental fitness.

During the event, teens got a chance to show off their lifting skills and were joined by staff.

“The world is the beast,” Singleton explained. “As young men you’re trying to face that by yourselves and you don’t actually know how to ask for help. We need a circle of friends and supporters to keep that beast off our backs.”

Assistant Principal Dr. Tracey Walker praised the event, saying “the lessons were aligned with trauma-informed care and highlighted the importance of addressing our mental health needs.”

A student art show was also displayed at the entrance.

Youth dubbed their program “Mindset, Over Muscle” and vowed to continue working on the lessons they learned.
