Program Description
Police departments across the nation have implemented programs within their cities that involve police officers working in another capacity within the community. The purpose is to provide the citizens with a different type of opportunity to interact with police officers in a less threatening and authoritative situation. The intention is to help at-risk youth and improve overall police-community relations (Somerville, 2009). One such concept is community policing. For community policing to be effective, it is essential that law enforcement officers engage in communities in which they work (Mbuba, 2010). The aim is to involve police officers in off duty work during which time they can garner the trust and respect of the neighborhood by allowing citizens to see them as human beings (Somerville, 2009). If the citizens can relate to the officers as people, a trusting relationship can develop . This training will explore factors influencing citizens’ perception of police, police perception of their roles, their legitimacy and criminality.
