Welcome to the Pairing Achievement with Service (PAWS) Alumni page.  All dogs on the page were enrolled in the PAWS program at the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Corrections Complex in Brownwood, Texas.
PAWS is a unique program that uses the natural relationship that comes from the bond between humans and animals living together and being responsible for each other.
The PAWS program pairs select TYC youth with K9 partners for 12 weeks. The dogs come from local animal shelters; learn basic commands and improved socialization skills. Youth learn responsibility, patience and how to care for another living being and benefit from the companionship. Unless otherwise noted, all the dogs listed for adoption have achieved or will achieve their American Kennel Club certification as a Canine Good Citizen (CGC). This certification is recognized as the gold standard for dog behavior.

During the 12 week program, youth are responsible for their dogs at all times. They must groom, feed, and train their K9. The dogs live on the dorm with their human caretakers.

Dogs can be adopted through the Corinne T. Smith Animal Shelter in Brownwood.  Additional information about adopting a PAWS dog can be obtained by contacting the shelter at (325) 646-0617.  All dogs come with current vaccinations and are on heartworm preventative.  Each dog is also micro-chipped.

Without the support of the following persons and organizations, the PAWS program could not function like it does.  The PAWS program wishes to thank the following for their support:

Corinne T. Smith Animal Shelter
Dr. Joe Speck, DVM
Ag-Mart
Kimberly Burgan Dog Training
Dr. Pepper
Premier Pet Supplies

If you are interested in providing a forever home to one of these fine, trained dogs, please contact the Corinne T. Smith Animal Shelter at: (325) 646-0617.

Donations can be made to the Brownwood Community Advisory Council for the Benefit of TYC Youth. For additional information on the PAWS program contact Holli Fenton (325) 641-4260 or Cris Burton at (512) 424-6049.

PARIS

photo of Paris

Oui! Oui! – Bonjour! Jus suis Paris. I am a terrier mix; my coat is brown and I stand about 1-½ ft. tall with a curly tail. Was that a squirrel? When I first meet people I might be a little shy but after I figure out you are OK, I am very playful. Was that a squirrel? I am always looking for the next time you are going to play with me. “woo-hoo-- throw me the ball.” Was that a squirrel? Can you tell I get a little distracted? However, I am very loving and love to cuddle. I do not like to be left alone unless you leave me something in my room to help keep my attention. I’m really smart and I like playing with toys and solving puzzles, especially if there is food involved! I have learned a lot of skills like; sit, down, walking on a loose leash, and many others. I am very smart and eager to learn more. I’m working hard to learn all the elements of the Canine Good Citizen test and when I do, I’ll be ready for my fur-ever home. Will you be ready for me? SQUIRREL!!! You can reach me by contacting Holli Fenton (325) 641 4260 or Cris Burton (512) 490-7049.

I like to solve puzzles that have tasty treats in them too. I eat about 3 ½ cups of Taste of the Wild dog food. I am approximately 65-75 lbs. I am very friendly but sometimes do my own thing. I have learned many tricks such as; weaving through the legs, pray, left and right paw, high five and ten, and I know how to play fetch. I have learned all my CGC skills and I do a great recall. She would do well with children over three as she would love to have a playmate. She loves to play fetch and all kinds of toys. Roxii is very affectionate and sweet. Some tricks she knows are roll over, play dead, speak, paw, pretty sit and weave. She can fetch a phone when the handler falls and can’t get up. She is a Canine Good Citizen. She eats one cup of food each day. She will also exterminate all the bugs at your house. You can’t go wrong by adopting Roxii!.

SQUIRT

photo of Squirt

Squirt is a multi-color Alaskan Husky mix. He is about 1 year old and weighs about 40-45 lbs. His favorite food is Earthborn; he eats about 3 cups a day. Squirt likes to be an active dog, however, is still very loving. He is a puppy at heart; he is very sociable and easy going. He will do well with kids over 8. He knows how to shake; high five, hug, and play fetch. But giving hugs and play fetch are his two favorite tricks. Squirt is a Canine Good Citizen so he does well on a leash and is well behaved in public. Squirt will make a great addition to any home and want to be a part of a “forever” pack.

ABEL

photo of AbelHi, I’m Abel. I’m a male dog around 2-3 years old and weigh approximately 45-50 lbs. I’m an Australian Cattle dog mixed with Australian Shepherd and Catahoula hound too. I know how to roll over and play dead. I love to run and play and watching birds fascinates me. Most of the time I’m pretty laid back and just like to have my belly rubbed. I’m looking for a family that has a lot of yard area to run around in. I need an owner who will guide me, love me and keep up with my training. I am a dedicated, loyal pup who shows respect for everyone. Sometimes I get easily startled like when I’m sleeping so my “forever family” needs to understand how to be gentle and kind so I don’t get scared. I would do best in a family with older children (10+).

JAKE

photo of JakeJake is a very energetic and playful, male, puppy, about 10 – 12 months old.  He loves to be the center of attention.  He’s the kind of dog that likes to be the only dog in the house which is best for him.  He needs someone strong, confident and not a pushover.  Jake likes to use his “charm” to get what he wants.  Like I said, he wants all the attention to be on him.  He’s going to need someone that is home and able to entertain him.  Jake can be left on his own in the house, just make sure to keep your shoes locked up!  Jake will whine if he needs to use the restroom.  If you choose to use a kennel, he knows the simple demand “Jake go to your room”.  Do NOT feed or water him in the kennel, he will make a mess and it’s best to supervise him while he is eating his food.  He eats three cups of dog food once a day.  He doesn’t care for hard treats, he likes the meaty ones.  When trying to look for a place for him to sleep, make sure he can see you as he has some separation issues.  Jake can be trusted to love other people but please be careful when introducing another dog to him.  He is going to need a big back yard.  Do not let him loose in an unclosed area until you build a relationship.  Jake is very strong-willed dog.  Take care of him!  Other character traits include: protective, funny, loving, caring, strong, playful, relaxing, confident, explorer, curious, trained, trusting and charming.

JODECI

photo of Jodeci Jodeci is a beautiful 1 to 1-½ yr. old, 65 lb. male, Catahoula hound mix with lots of personality. He has a beautiful brown and white coat with a few freckles. Eye color is blue, crystal blue. Jodeci is a thinker and very smart. He will need a job like running, agility, tracking or someone that is active to exercise his brain and his body. He is very serious at times but can clown around with the best of them. He can also be very hyper and curious. His likes include: space, attention, playing fetch, running, catching treats, obstacles and agility, jumping over ropes and through tires. Jodeci responds best by being called by his first name followed by the command. He does not like it when you keep him in his room without exercise. His tricks include: sit, down, stay, come, bang (play dead), paw, high-five, close door, open door to his cage and drop it. Jodeci will need someone with a personality as strong as his so that he can maintain his training. Consistent, positive and focused training will create a bond and loyalty that will be unmatched. If you are a single family home with older children (12+) or a single adult with an active lifestyle, then Jodeci is waiting to come to his forever home.

photo of Jr.Jr. is a medium sized chocolate Labrador / Chesapeake Bay Retriever about1-½ to 2yrs. old. He weighs approximately 60lbs. He has beautiful, bright see-thru green eyes. He loves to be hugged and loves to get attention. He can eat all day if you let him! He likes to be in crowds because all eyes are always on him because he is so handsome. He likes to play with any type of toy; he is not picky at all! He does not like for anyone to ignore him. He will just sit there and wait for you to pet him. Other than that, he is an awesome dog and very outgoing! He is one of the best dogs I’ve ever known. He is like no other; he is one of a kind to me. Jr. should be with a family with kids and can be an inside or outside dog. If he’s inside, he will scratch at the door to let you know when he needs to use the restroom. He is also very out-going, playful, awesome, a sweet heart, caring, sensitive and understanding! Jr. will be available for adoption in late July.

LAYLA

photo of LaylaCheck out Layla! This sweet, spayed girl will charm you with her ability to learn. She knows how to crawl, roll over, and shake, and is crate trained. Would you like your morning paper delivered to your feet? She can fetch, too! Like many students, she excels in many subjects but has a bit of difficulty with just one: in Layla’s case, it’s meeting strangers. She will accept and bond with new people, but not quickly enough to earn her full CGC certification. So, that one missing step has cost her a chance to graduate from her program with full honors, but she is seeking an adoptive home where she can continue her training. Consultation with a certified trainer will be provided if the adoptive family would like to continue working with her on her education. She is hesitant around young children, so a home with adults/older children would be best. Can you help her graduate into a forever home?

QUEENIE

photo of QueenieQueenie is an adorable Pug and Boston Terrier (?) mix about 2 years old and weighs approximately 15lbs. Queenie is very energetic and loves to play. Queenie gets distracted very easily during leash walking. She pulls mainly because she is interested in everything around her that moves. But if you leash walk with her the proper way she does excellent. You will need to be patient with her when it is time for her restroom breaks. Queenie is a very alert dog. She likes to know what is going on around her. Queenie is very curious about other dogs and wants to play. She can be very hard headed but you have to be consistent with her, otherwise she’ll run over you, thus her name, because that’s how she likes to be treated. Queenie doesn’t like to be left alone. She loves to play. She is very friendly. The best home for Queenie would be someone who has children and who is willing to show love, spoil her a bit but also be consistent and keep up her training so she does not get bored. Queenie will be ready to grace her forever home with her royal presence sometime in late July.
