Volunteer grandparents reach across the years to help TJJD youth

Students at Willoughby Halfway House, in Fort Worth, received some gorgeous greetings in the mail this spring from volunteers with the Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program in Denton.

The “grandmas” and “grandpas” in this program volunteer their time to help inspire and motivate young people in various settings, such as foster kids and justice-involved youth.

Their personalized, handmade cards simply say “hello” and offer inspirational messages to brighten the day for these kids.

TJJD is grateful for this partnership with Texas Health and Human Services Commission (AES division), which operates the volunteer program. TJJD North District Community Coordinator Denise Caldwell arranged for the group to work with Willoughby as part of her continuing efforts to expand the volunteer corps helping TJJD youth on parole in the D/FW area or at Willoughby.

The Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program (https://bit.ly/3wacT1l) is open to adults 55 and older who want to support and mentor children in need in Texas. Unlike fulltime foster parents or grandparents with whom kids reside, the foster volunteers provide parttime help. Still, they fill an important support role serving young people in multiple ways.
